Normal stools are brown in color and have a soft to firm consistency. Normal stools are usually: Medium to dark brown in color – this is because they contain a pigment called bilirubin, which is formed when red blood cells break down. Strong odor – Bacteria in the stool give off gases that contain the unpleasant odor associated with poop. Pain-free defecation: A healthy bowel movement should be painless and require minimal strain.

The long shape of the stool, similar to a sausage, is due to the shape of the intestines. The stool can also be other colors, such as: Black Black stools, especially if they have the appearance of coffee grounds, suggest gastrointestinal bleeding.

Substances like iron supplements, black licorice, stout, and bismuth medications also cause black stools. Some anti-diarrhea medications cause white stools. Green Spinach, kale, or other green foods can cause green stools.

However, green stools can be a sign that there is too much bile and not enough bilirubin in the poop. Red Share on Pinterest While normal stool is usually brown, other colors are possible, including white or black.

Stools that are red in color may be the result of gastrointestinal bleeding. Small amounts of blood in the stool can indicate hemorrhoids. Eating red beets or berries, or drinking beet or tomato juice, also turns stools red. Once these foods have passed through the digestive tract, the stool should turn brown again.

Orange Eating lots of orange-colored foods, which are rich in a pigment called beta-carotene, causes orange-colored stools. Carrots, sweet potatoes and winter squash are among the many foods that contain this pigment. Yellow If the stool appears yellow or has a greasy appearance, it suggests that it contains too much fat. This may be the result of absorption problems, or difficulty producing enzymes or bile. Usually this is due to diet or some other minor cause.
